Anderson Silva was injured going into the fight

In an interview, Silva's Manager, Ed Soares talks about how Anderson was injured sparring Lyoto Machida;

"It was really close because the doctors didn't want him to fight. He hurt his rib last Friday in sparring. He hurt it, but he didn't think it was hurt that bad and then Sunday morning, I had about 13 missed calls in a matter of 25 minutes. They were all from Anderson and he was calling me to tell me he was in pain. He couldn't breathe. I took him to the hospital and they X-Rayed each rib and they noticed that it was a bit swollen, but there was no fracture. They said it was bruised ribs, but the way he reacted when they touched it and how tender they were, they said it was in the muscle as well as the bruise. I'm not a doctor, but this is just what they told us. They prescribed some Ibuprofen 800 for him because it was so close to the fight, they couldn't do any Vicodin.

The doctors said, "I really don't recommend that he fights," but Anderson said, "No man, the show must go on. I'm going to fight." I put it this way, he was supposed to corner Mark Munoz on Sunday for his fight against Okami, but I made him stay at home in bed. He was just lying around and letting his ribs heal up on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday because we traveled. He didn't train again until we got to Oakland. He gave his ribs about a 5-day rest."

And then asked about a rematch with Sonnen, Soares comments;

"I mean, I don't necessarily think an immediate rematch is legitimate. It's not like he won by decision. You got submitted, man. You were on top of him for 23 minutes of the fight and you couldn't finish him. Anderson got a few bumps and bruises, but let's be realistic, you're on a guy 23 minutes and you couldn't finish him? Why should he get a rematch?"

Anderson Silva: Sonnen is disrespectful

Since Chael Sonnen's title bout with Anderson Silva has been announced, Sonnen has used his verbal skills to get inside Silva's head. Using Twitter and interviews, Sonnen has derided Silva, his camp and his opponents.

Until now, Silva had taken the ribbing in stride, but in an interview with Brazilian news outlet Tatame, he finally fired back.

“What he’s saying is disrespecting me, he’s disrespecting me and all opponents I’ve faced. Dan Henderson, in my opinion, is the best wrestler that there is out there on MMA."

Silva went on to joke about Sonnen's one-time career path of politics. Sonnen was in the Oregon state Senate race earlier this year, but dropped out because of an undisclosed legal issue.

"Do you want to be a politician, or do you wanna be a fighter or you want to be a gangster. I chose, for myself, being a fighter. If I wasn’t a fighter, I’d be a cop, and on that case it’d be a serious problem, because you’re a gangster and I’m a cop. Well, I’m a fighter and you yet don’t know what you are, you’ll still choose what you’ll be."

Trash talking is par for the course in building up a title bout, but in the past, Silva has taken the talk personally. Before his bizarre match with Demian Maia, Silva was offended by some of the things said by Maia. This led to Silva yelling at Maia during the bout, calling him a playboy and asking where his jiu-jitsu was.

We'll see how Silva truly reacts to Sonnen's comments when they face off on Aug. 7 in Oakland.

Lyoto Machida ready to come back!

The last time Lyoto Machida stepped in the Octagon things didn't go his way.

Facing Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in May, Machida fell victim to the Brazilian's power and suffered a TKO loss, the first of his career, while also losing the UFC light heavyweight title.

Now back in training, Machida looks back at the fight with a clear mind, and says that now he's seen it all as a fighter, and that's only going to make him better.

"He told me now he feels like a complete fighter," said Machida's manager Ed Soares when appearing on MMAWeekly.com Radio. "He knows what it's like to win, he knows what it's like to be a champion, and now he knows what it's like to lose. He feels like a complete fighter, and I know without a doubt he's going to come back a better fighter, and it's just a matter of time before he has that belt around his waist again."

As far as a timeline for Machida's return, he's just waiting on a call from the UFC. Currently training alongside Anderson Silva, Machida is ready for a return to action, and wants to face the best the UFC can give him.

"He's out here training, we're ready to go right now," said Soares. "He's ready to fight whoever, he wants to fight the best too."

A few different names have been mentioned as possible opponents, including Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Forrest Griffin, while there are others that intrigue the former champion as well.

One name that popped up was former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin, who just knocked out Chuck Liddell in June, and could be looking for a big fight at 205 pounds. Franklin and Machida actually fought in 2003 in Japan in what was Machida's third professional fight.

The Brazilian finished Franklin with a head kick and punches in the second round, and handed the former Cincinnati math teacher his first loss as a professional.

"That could be a big fight," Soares said about a fight with Franklin. "At the end of the day that's the first guy who gave Rich Franklin his first loss, maybe Rich Franklin would like to avenge that. That could be a good fight."

One other interesting fight that Soares mentioned is a possible match-up between Machida and fellow Brazilian Vitor Belfort. The former champion has been sidelined with an injury from prior to his previously scheduled April match-up with Anderson Silva, but now he's back healthy and looking for a fight.

"You know what I think would be interesting is how about a Vitor Belfort?" said Soares. "Vitor Belfort/Lyoto Machida? I think Vitor now will get another fight before he fights Anderson Silva. Put it this way, anything can happen, you never know."

Of course the ultimate fight that Machida wants is another run at Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. The pair is currently tied with one win each, and Machida would like nothing more than to take back the title from the man that took it from him.

"He'd love to fight Shogun again," Soares commented. "It's 1-1 now, you know what I mean? Let's fight it again. But he'll fight whoever. When the UFC is ready, they'll give us that shot. We'd love to fight him right now, but whoever the UFC gives us is fine."

Whatever the match-up is, Lyoto Machida is locked and loaded, and ready to fight.

Machida may require orbital surgery following UFC 113 beating from Shogun

Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida may require surgery to repair a fractured orbital he suffered at the hands of Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC 113, according to his manager Ed Soares.

“He does have a slight hairline fracture, and the reason why it puffed up is the doctor said there was air that got in, and that’s why it fills up,” Soares told MMAJunkie.com.

In the highly anticipated rematch of their controversial UFC 104 bout, Shogun knocked Machida to the canvas with a crisp right hook late in the first round before sealing the deal with a barrage of at least eight undefended ground blows. The damage left Machida’s left eye severely swollen.

“You have almost like a seal with your orbital, and when you have a little hairline fracture and you blow your nose, it just fills up with air,” said Soares. “It’s nothing too major. He may have to have surgery; he may not. It’s up in the air right now.”

No schedule has been set for the return of the former UFC light heavyweight champion.

Machida vs. Nogueira????

Just when Mike Swick was pointing out the pitfalls of fighting one of his American Kickboxing Academy teammates, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Lyoto Machida’s manager discussed how his clients could potentially wind up across each other in the Octagon.


“(Rogerio) wants what every other light heavyweight wants in that category and that’s he wants a belt,” said Ed Soares. “Whatever fight is going to be, put him up a little bit closer towards that title shot, that’s where he wants to be, that’s who he wants to fight.”

It turns out Nogueira is expected to face former UFC light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin at UFC 113 on May 8 in Montreal. A win over a former champion surely would “put him a little bit closer towards that title shot.”

Despite Nogueira and Machida being Black House teammates, Soares believes a battle over the belt would be enough for the two to face each other, not out of any disparagement, but out of respect.

“They both want the same thing. Lyoto wants to keep his belt and Rogerio wants it. We’ll cross that bridge when it comes, but I think when push comes to shove if that fight was to come up, I think they’d fight each other. They’re friends they respect each other very much,” Soares told MMAWeekly Radio recently.

“At the end of the day, they both want one thing. If the only way is that they’re going to have to fight, like I said, we’ll cross that bridge when it comes, but I think it could happen.”

Nogueira, of course, first has to get past Griffin, which is no small task.

Machida also has his own hurdle to cross, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. Machida and Rua fought once before, at UFC 104 last October, with the champ earning a controversial unanimous decision. Many felt that Rua should have gotten the nod, and UFC president Dana White granted an immediate rematch.

There are other contenders in the mix as well; fighters like Rashad Evans, Quinton Jackson, Jon Jones, and even another teammate, middleweight champ Anderson Silva.

But if each wins his next bout, another section of the bridge between Machida and Nogueira will be in place.
